摘要

Firefighting is a dangerous job, but one that is crucial to the protection of life and property. The National Fire Protection Association reports that in 2009 U.S. fire departments responded to 362,500 home structure fires, and according to the National Inter-agency Fire Center, between 1 Jan., 2010, and 4 Oct., 2010, nearly 58,000 wildland fires occurred, burning nearly three million acres. Last year, 90 fire fighters died in the line of duty and 3,010 individuals lost their lives as the result of fires. Fires took more civilian lives in 2009 than all other natural disasters combined.
