AeroVironment recently secured a $2.1 million Phase II contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to build a prototype for its Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program.rnThe purpose of the NAV prototype, which will be 6 inches or fewer in size, is to allow both indoor and outdoor flight. The system employs flapping wing technology, and in December 2008 the company's interim test vehicle was capable of hovering for 20 seconds using its own energy source, something the company says is a first.
