The U.S. Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) is developing a canisterized underwater launch system for mini-unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) that would allow them to be deployed from unmanned underwater vehicles or divers.rnA prototype system has been undergoing rapid development since November 2006 at SPAWAR's "Waterworks" center in Point Loma, Calif., using Applied Research Associates' TACMAV tactical micro air vehicle. The all-electric unmanned aircraft features a rolling wing that unfurls upon being ejected from the launcher.rnThe initial demonstrator underwent autonomous launch trials in April 2007, but the Navy is also looking at alternate vehicles, including ARA's new Nighthawk variant of the TACMAV, says Daniel Sura, a member of the SPAWAR project team.
