摘要

Enabling unmanned aerial systems to sense and avoid obstacles is an extraordinary challenge but developing technologies for unmanned ground and sea vehicles to do it can be even more formidable. UAS must be able to sense obstacles in the air and on the ground in time to safely avoid them while observing air navigation rules. The task for unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) is even more complex -in part because they must be able to discriminate among various types of objects in their paths and act appropriately. For example, they must be able to detect and maneuver around impassable objects, such as large boulders, without halting when they encounter objects they could pass over or through, such as tall grass.
