Although military applications drive most development of unmanned vehicle systems, civil industries around the world are moving to replace man with machine, particularly in niche areas such as mining and agriculture. An example is Australia. Although the country's military takes a slower road toward robotic operations, its mining industry looks to the day when unmanned vehicles can satisfy a voracious labor appetite by replacing more human operators with machines, Hugh Durrant-Whyte, research director for the Australian Centre for Field Robotics at the University of Sydney, told attendees of the RoboBusiness conference last month in Pittsburgh.
