Ryan Stenson has a vivid memory of the 2003 AUVSI student competition for unmanned underwater vehicles. "We had built a brand new vehicle that was, we thought, an order of magnitude [better than] anything else we had done. The team was really coming together well." Before the finals, the weather had been cloudy. "On the day of the qualifying run, the clouds went away and it got sunny, and all of our vision processing stuff broke," he says.
