It's a question that for the moment remains hanging in the air: When will we see unmanned aerial systems operating alongside conventional air traffic in European skies? Europe's UAS community already sense that the ultimate prize is within reach as some of the European Union's biggest political players increasingly take up the issue.rnThe goal of enabling unmanned aerial systems to operate alongside conventional air traffic is high on the agenda of European governments. This May, European defense ministers, meeting as the steering board of the European Defence Agency (EDA), backed a new initiative focusing initially on integrating UAS into general air traffic. The proposal, supported by the European Union's administrative wing, the European Commission, included a € 500,000 ($638,350) roadmap study into the technological, political, legal and economic challenges facing such a move. The initiative was announced at AUVSI's Unmanned Systems Europe 2007 conference in Koln, Germany.
