The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is considering issuing a Certificate of Authorization to two universities to collect data about using CropCam unmanned aerial systems for civilian purposes such as agriculture.rnIt would be a breakthrough for the Canadian company, owned by autopilot producer Micropilot. CropCam has been selling its vehicles primarily to governments for aerial views of forest fires and other natural disasters. Officials from CropCam, Georgia Tech University and the Virginia Commonwealth University met with the FAA recently to start the process of submitting proposals for a COA.rnThe FAA wants data from real-life experiences and not something that is staged, says CropCam executive Lisa Shaw. She says the initiative is a step in the right direction and definitely a "thaw" with the FAA.
