Frederick M. Strader was brought aboard last August as president and chief executive officer of both United Industrial Corp. and AAI, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) manufacturing subsidiary. That decision accompanied a strategic shift to concentrate on defense products. Since then, the Hunt Valley, MD-based company with about 1,500 workers has been shedding its non-defense activities in order to focus on its UAVs, training and simulation systems, and automated aircraft test and maintenance equipment. The company, best known for its Shadow Tactical UAV system, had put itself up for sale in April 2002. But United Industrial was unable to consummate a sale despite receiving some attractive offers. It went off the auction block last September and Strader began retooling the company's strategy. According to the Pentagon's latest annual ranking of its major contractors, AAI sold $275 million worth of UAVs and other military equipment and systems to the U.S. military in Fiscal Year 2003, placing it 79th on the Top 100 list. But Strader hopes to expand his product portfolio, taking advantage of the booming unmanned aircraft market.
