Each year, students team with robots in the "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" (FIRST) Robotics Competition with regional faceoffs and the national championship held in April. The contest involves teams of high school students battling for bragging rights and $4 million in college scholarship money. My name is Sid Thangaraj, and I'm a senior at Houghton High School in Houghton, Michigan, located on the Upper Peninsula. I'm like any other high school student, except for one difference: I build robots. For the past several years, I have been involved in the FIRST Robotics Competition, which teaches creative problem solving and teamwork while stressing deadlines and finite requirements. Our team, dubbed "Superior Roboworks," consists of 15 high school students. We all attend Houghton High School, and we range between 14 to 18 years in age. Also involved are mentors who are students at Michigan Technological University (MTU), here in Houghton. They guide us with our design ideas and help us build our robot. Our adult advisors are Tony Schwaller, a physics teacher at my high school, and Doug Oppliger, who teaches engineering at MTU.
