The U.S. Army is training operators and technicians for its Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) at a state-of-the-art facility at Fort Huachuca, AZ. Mark Farrar is the director of the U.S. Army UAV Training Center with 75,000 square feet of instructional facilities, and a staff of 300 An expansion effort will add another 25,000 sq. ft of space, includi a simulations building, hanger, flight maintenance building and flight operations building consisting of classrooms and offices. The expansion began in December 2003 with the work to be completed by December 2004. The center is adjacent to Libby Army Airfield and features two improved paved runways of 2,000 feet and 2,500 feet, respectively. Both are used solely for UAV operations. The airspace over die center — an operating area of 40,000 cubic acres covering parts of Cochise and Santa Cruz Counties — is restricted. Controllers at Libby Army Airfield handle civilian or commercial traffic in this restricted airspace.
