As the Norway-developed Hugin autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) sees increasing civil and commercial uses worldwide, a military version of the AUV, designed for mine reconnaissance, is now at sea. The Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN) in February 2004 operationally deployed a Hugin Mine Reconnaissance System (MRS) pilot capability after taking delivery of a new militarized Hugin 1000 AUV from Kongsberg Maritime and the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), who jointly developed the unmanned underwater vehicle. The Hugin 1000 AUV, the base vehicle for the Hugin MRS, has a modular design. The fourth generation Hugin can be operated in autonomous, semi-autonomous and supervised modes, achieving a top speed of six knots. The center section can be adapted to different sensor suites. Based on the commercial Hugin 3000 AUV, the Hugin 1000 offers about half the volume, weight and endurance of the third-generation Hugin AUV. (Its smaller size eases handling and military missions do not require as much endurance.).
