Head of the Pentagon's dedicated research and development organization since May 1998, Frank Fernandez manages DARPA and its high payoff projects, which include the recently unveiled Boeing X-45 Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV), the A160 Hummingbird high endurance vertical/takeoff-and-landing UAV, the Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing (CRW) demonstration and Future Combat Systems (FCS). Prior to DARPA, he ran applied research organizations in California. Dr. Fernandez received his PhD in Aeronautics from California Institute of Technology in 1969.
