More importantly, they, and others, founded Wall Street banking dynasties that laid the foundations of American finance and defined American capitalism. On a broader scale, these partnerships played an integral role in shaping both American and world history—raising money for wars, helping to build the country's first transcontinental railroad system, and even guiding post-war reparations for Germany, which ultimately paved the way for the economic and political instability that fomented World War II.
