Walk down the wide, clean boulevards of Buenos Aires, Argentina, beneath the city's tall sycamore trees, their leaves turning crinkly brown with the onset of fall in the Southern Hemisphere, and it's difficult to think of this city as mired in one of the planet's most troublesome financial melt-downs. The retail stores that line Avenida Cordoba, Avenida Santa Fe, and Calle Florida are full of stylish goods and shoppers. People take long afternoon lunches in the city's tastefully appointed restaurants, lingering over good food and conversation. There are more liquidacion (sale) signs in store windows than you'll see in other international capitals. There are many beggars and homeless people in the streets, but fewer than one encounters panhandling in downtown San Francisco or sleeping on steam grates in Washington, D.C. People stop to talk or laugh with one another on the streets here. They go to modern shopping malls to see Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and they attend the opera and dozens of theatrical events. Bookstores and coffee shops are crowded with people in pursuit of matters intellectual.
