The battle between pure-play and bricks-and-mortar banks was almost a no-show, as e-banks began throwing in the towel right from the start. With some exceptions, the mainstreaming of the commercial Internet over the past year has largely eclipsed the emergence of a vibrant e-banking industry poised to give established banks a run for their money. In the United States, at least, online banking has largely turned into a new marketing and service-delivery channel for the very banks that the Net-only banks were supposed to challenge.
