"Tt was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Not Charles Dickens' 18th-century London, but the technology industry over the last two years. An incredible optimism generated by innovation and new business models has given way to pessimism about the future of the sector, which, in my view, is unwarranted. Market historians will have to judge whether the recent roller-coaster ride in technology reflects a fundamental economic force, or is the result of irrational exuberance (and irrational depression). Regardless, it is clear that the creation of the World Wide Web has fundamentally changed not only the way business is done, but also the way people communicate. Because of this, the Web has changed the way we live. People have an inherent desire to socialize, to communicate, and to network. The Internet is the ultimate network.
