Looking at the history of the world and, more particularly, the history of science in the form of the artifacts that societies leave behind, those items left to us by the makers of instruments hold a special place of fascination. The mechanical clocks, navigational devices, and jacquard looms housed in our nation's museums are indicators of the heights to which societies or people have aspired. Charles Babbage's calculating machine, with its dozens of precisely milled brass gears, gleams golden under display lighting and fairly shouts that its maker was contemplating some great change in how society functions.
