Environmental biotechnology seems to offer the best hope, whether using microorganisms to treat pollution (bioremediation) or using plants (phytoremediation), for making green technologies easier. Dreams aside, the cold, hard numbers suggest there should be a way to make money in environmental biotech. Environmental problems are so serious and widespread that the US EPA once estimated it would take $1.7 trillion to clean up with conventional methods. The odds of spending that much on environmental cleanup are worse than the health prospects of squatters on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. But big money is spent. Environmental Business International says the hazardous waste-management industry in the US will haul in $4.95 billion in 2001, and the field of remediation/industrial services will bring in another $11.69 billion.
