The actual role of the research analyst in investment banking is nothing like that portrayed in the media. Twelve hour days are the rigid rule, and the higher up the corporate ladder analysts climb, the more their working hours creep into evenings and weekends. Most spend 30% to 50% of their working time on the road. Every analysts is expected to cover a full workload of companies, producing daily research notes for th emorning meeteing, weekly or less regular reports on companies or sectors, and even less regular but, in some cases, significantly more in-depth studies of market sectors. In return for all of this effort, beginning analysts are paid $150,000 to $200,000 a year, and their annual bonuses range from 2 to 10 times their base pay.
