CHEVRON has suspended arbitration proceedings related to its departure from the Erawan field off Thailand in 2020 as the company seeks to resolve the contentious issue of whether it will be liable for the full cost of decommissioning infrastructure — a bill that could reach $2.5 billion. The issue dates back to 2016 when Thailand's Energy Ministry retroactively enforced a new regulation requiring operators to pay decommissioning costs of all infrastructure they installed, even if they no longer operate the equipment.
