In the introduction to Social Justice in Diverse Suburbs, Christopher Niedt offers insight into the social and political movements manifest among diverse suburbs in the United States. Although the author does not define what is meant by the term "diverse," it soon becomes clear that "diverse" is used to debunk a common notion that all suburbs are homogeneous in terms of aesthetics; social, cultural, and political activities; and population demographics. In turn, suburbs are described in terms of their social, cultural, political and population diversity internally, as well as diversity across suburbs, in relation to their spaces of importance, relevance to history, and issues.
