How this special issue came about is an interesting story. Prior to the 2006 AERA annual meetings journal editors were asked to volunteer to take part in a new format to be entitled Mentoring Roundtables. The idea was that authors interested in placing manuscripts in specific journals could submit them prior to the meetings and subsequently meet with the journal editors to receive face-to-face feedback. We decided that this was a wonderful idea, but wondered if we would receive enough submissions to fill the ninety or so minutes allotted for the session. Much to our surprise we received 37 manuscripts. Our immediate problem was to figure out some decision rules, and the best way to interact with selected authors during the AERA session.
