Studying the fundamental aspects of biology sometimes can lead to unexpected findings that relate directly to human disease. In one of the latest examples of scientific serendipity, researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, Calif., found that an important quality-con-trol mechanism in baker's yeast is closely connected to hypomyelinat-ing leukodystrophy, a debilitating disease found in children.
