摘要

By 2030, the youngest of the baby boomers will have reached the age of eligibility for Medicare. The total number of Medicare enrollees is expected to reach 81,500,-000, up from 2020's 64,300,000, placing a significant strain on the resources of the U.S. health care system, points out Dave Rich, CEO of Ensurem, a Florida-based insurance technology and product distribution firm. The baby boom generation-people born between 1946-64-represents 21.19% of the U.S. population. While this generation has longer life expectancies and a much lower rate of smoking than previous generations, obesity is highly prevalent, as are chronic conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Baby boomers have become more comfortable using technology, leading to a widespread increase in adoption of teleheatth services during the COVID-19 pandemic, but an underappreciated statutory amendment of the Social Security Act will prevent continued use of telehealth services for all but a small number of Medicare recipients once the COVID-based health emergency has come to an end.
