In the 1948 presidential election, my parents voted for opposing candidates, Mother for Democrat Harry Truman and Dad for Republican Thomas Dewey. It never was a subject of contention in our household. In fact, they laughed about how they cancelled out each other's vote. No matter how contentious presidential campaigns were in those years, political disagreements rarely severed families or friendships. Politics was not a blood sport. A democracy in which there are deep political cleavages is fragile and vulnerable. In the worst cases, civil war emerges, as it did in 1861. The U.S., however, is not at that point-but for how long?
