A HALF-CENTURY ago, announcer and former player Joe Garagiola wrote the best-selling book, Baseball Is a Funny Game. It still is. In 1989, ex-big leaguer and voice of the Milwaukee Brewers Bob Uecker stole the show in the movie comedy "Major League" from Tom Berenger, Wesley Snipes, and Charlie Sheen. Many remember Uecker's "just a bit outside" call as a wild pitch hit the screen.Another announcer, the San Francisco Giants' and Oakland Athletics' Lon Simmons, liked to twit himself. A listener admitted a crush on Simmons since childhood. "You must have been terribly deprived," mused the funnyman. A few years back, Simmons moved to Maui, Hawaii-California was sad to see him go.
