We really do not have any excuse. We are a democracy, of sorts, but we were naive and we were conned by Pres. George W. Bush, and he is a master. He said watch the left hand (terrorism) and he did us in with a right to the solar plexus, the gut of our global standing. While he had us distracted with an invasion of Iraq, armed with lies and distortions, the rest of our foreign policy and national standing was falling to pieces. Among seasoned observers of U.S. foreign policy-including Thomas Friedman, Fareed Zakaria, David Brooks, and Bob Woodward-the consensus is that the U.S. has frittered away the global leadership it enjoyed during the Bill Clinton years and now is rivaled by China, India, Russia, the EU, and even the French (by themselves!; a ghastly thought for the American right wing).
