It is nothing new to suggest that the manufacturing landscape is changing with the emergence of China as a powerful and low cost manufacturer, but its biggest asset is not its manufacturing capabilities but its giant higher education machine that is churning out tens of thousands of highly qualified engineers every year. China certainly has the quantity of engineering students in numbers that often beggar belief, and, despite misgivings in some sectors, its graduates are of high quality.
