Condition based maintenance (CBM) is increasingly becoming the norm in recent times. In December 2004 an undersea earthquake near Sumatra caused huge tsunamis that affected several countries, causing 230 000 deaths. At present, scientists from different countries are working together on a system to warn if a recurrence is imminent. Such a system is an example of condition monitoring, which is the basis of CBM.
