It all started early in 1961. I was doing research on my MSc at Rhodes University and had run into a mental block. Prof Jack Gledhill came into the tea room at the Physics Department one day. He laughed as he told us: "I have just had a call from CSIR to find out if we are interested in launching an Antarctic project. I have no idea who would want to go, or how to get it started."
