The new edition of Derbyshire adds to the formidable tally of work that Clare Hartwell has undertaken on the series, with one volume, two co-authored volumes and a city guide to her name. The original edition of 1953 was a slim paperback of 282 pages, the 1978 revision by Elizabeth Williamson was a much more substantial volume of 414 pages and the new version is a 733-page behemoth. As with other recent revisions, the introduction is augmented with sections by specialists: Ian Thomas on geology and building stones, Paul Everson on archaeology, Gavin Watson on railways.
