The Victoria County History holds a very special place in the life of this reviewer. At the age of eleven I happened upon a copy in the school library which dealt with the area of Sussex where I live and for the rest of my time at school it was all but perpetually on loan to me. When I left, the school gifted it to me. More than 50 years later the volume is still regularly in use. It is against this backdrop I review this, the latest Oxfordshire volume. With a similar page count to my trusted Sussex tome, the topic of this present volume is Ewelme Hundred, a 39 square mile area in south-east Oxfordshire containing fourteen rural parishes, which in 1801 had a total of 967 houses. In terms of area, the coverage is a sixth that of my well-thumbed Sussex tome, containing a little under a quarter the number of houses as at 1801. These basic statistics vividly indicate how much the series has developed.
