Because of their distinctive architectural character, visual appeal and intriguing communal organisation, almshouses are among the more familiar faces of social welfare provision during the past four centuries. However, as Nigel Goose emphasises in his thought-provoking introductory chapter to this impressive volume, there has been remarkably little serious historical research into their origins, character, role and significance. The only major exception, he suggests, are the early medieval hospital-type almshouses, which have attracted scholarly attention, but are clearly not representative. Goose poses a series of questions about the diverse nature of almshouses, the relative importance of their role in relation to better-researched forms of welfare under the 1601 Poor Law system, and the pronounced geographical variation in their provision. The book is a wide-ranging collaborative work, the product of a research project undertaken by the FACHRS in collaboration with the Local Population Studies Society and with over 50 individual researchers. There are twenty chapters, divided into three groups under the headings 'History, buildings and community', 'Places' and 'Themes'.
