摘要

This monumental, indeed heroic, work, the result of most of a lifetime's study by the author and his collaborators, aims to be a comprehensive survey of all vernacular buildings on the islands before c. 1800; the author had already covered churches in his Channel Island Churches (1986), and published The Guernsey House in 1980. Channel Island Houses, which replaces and corrects, as well as greatly amplifying, that book, succeeds in its aim by including the results of examination of more than 2307 houses and farmsteads, and some castles. All (except those on Herm and Jethou) are covered in a systematic, keyed tabulation of features in Part 3, which also includes superb reproductions of the Richmond Survey's 1787 maps of Guernsey and Jersey, and modern maps of similar standard of Sark and the town of St Anne's, Alderney, on which the buildings are plotted. Part 1 is analytic, starting with general chapters on the development of house-types from the Middle Ages, and continuing with topical chapters on specific building features. The conclusions come in the middle of the book, at the end of this Part.
