摘要

This is an outstanding collection of essays that adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding how houses and households functioned and takes a genuinely regional perspective. The book is divided into three sections: the first looks at the form and development of houses in the region; the second focuses on decoration; and the third examines material culture through objects ranging across a wide range of media - glass, faience, bronze pots, ceramics and plaster ceilings. All the papers are well contextualised and many have substantial appendices and bodies of data in addition, making this a valuable reference book as well as a stimulating source of fresh ideas and perspectives. The book is excellently illustrated throughout. All seventeen essays are relevant to VA students: the following struck this reviewer as of particular interest.
