摘要

This long-awaited book, produced in collaboration with Bristol City Council, is the result of 35 years of painstaking research both in the field and in various record collections, and is a wonderful addition to the library of anyone with an interest in urban housing. As a Bristolian I find it both fascinating and heart-breaking; fascinating because of the amount of available information which Roger Leech has used to such good effect, heart-breaking because image after superb image reveals how much of this great city's heritage has been lost. Luckily, Bristol has been extremely well recorded, starting with the beautiful 1820s waterco-lours by Hugh O'Neill and others, showing both interiors and exteriors of numerous timber-framed houses, some already in various stages of picturesque decay. The quality both of the originals and of the reproduction has meant that they could be reduced to very small images with no loss of detail, enabling a large number to be squeezed in to this sumptuously illustrated volume. Early maps and plans have proved an invaluable resource, while high quality black-and-white photographs from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries further emphasise how much has gone. An evocative photo of the great hall of William Canynges' house of c. 1400 shows a delicately carved medieval roof, numerous stone corbel heads and a superb seventeenth-century staircase leading to a gallery around the open hall. All of which makes it incomprehensible that it was demolished in 1937 - a fact the author records without further comment, while the author of this review simmers with helpless rage.
