When The Buildings of England: Cornwall was originally published in 1951 - the first volume in the series - its stated aim was to give 'full particulars of the architectural features of all the ecclesiastical, public and domestic buildings of interest in each town and village'. It rightly proclaimed itself to be more detailed than any other existing guide, and it set an entirely new standard for a systematic approach to capturing the architectural character of an entire county, encompassing a vast chronology from prehistory to the present. The principles it laid down have endured: the extensive gazetteer, the general architectural introduction, and the section of illustrations. But since 1951 definitions of architectural and historic interest have greatly expanded, and there has been a growing body of research on all aspects of historic architecture - and, of course, over half a century of new building activity to bring into the mix. More attention has also been paid to character and local distinctiveness, not least the contribution of vernacular building traditions.
