A survey volume that seeks to cover nearly a thousand years of the history of York, to consider its social, economic and topographical development within the wider context of other English and continental towns, and to use a wide range of documentary and material evidence, is not short on ambition. The success of such a project is reliant on an author with a comprehensive knowledge of the history of the city, an ability to work adeptly with a range of sources and the scholarly arguments of multiple disciplines, and the skill to strike a balance between broad discussion and detail. With nearly 50 years' experience of researching and publishing on the history of York, as well as the broader subject of medieval and early modern urban history, there is perhaps no other author more suited to this task than D. M. Palliser.
