Recent building recording experience in Herefordshire has shown the potential of localised studies that include minutely detailed recording and analysis of timber-framed buildings. This paper argues that much current recording practice is unequal to the task of extracting and communicating all the available information that an historic building has to offer. It is suggested that future research could focus more fully on investigating and understanding groups of buildings at the parochial and settlement level before attempting to formulate broader theories concerning the dissemination of new ideas in respect of building layout, framing methods and decoration.
