On June 11, 2008, the first F-35B Lightning II rolled out of the Lockheed Martin factory in Fort Worth, Texas. Thousands of tests occurred over the next seven years and the US Marine Corps F-35B aircraft reached initial operational capability (IOC) on July 31, 2015, when a squadron of 10 was declared ready for operation. The primary role of the F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft is ground attack with a secondary air-to-air role. Current planning is for a total purchase of more than 3,100 F-35s. In addition to some 500 F-35B STOVLs, more than 2,300 conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) F-35As, and about 340 carrier-based F-35Cs will also be built.
