The Vertical Flight Foundation was established in 7 967 as the philanthropic arm of the American Helicopter Society. The Foundation's operation is made possible solely through voluntary tax-deductible contributions. In 7977, AHS began awarding VFF scholarships to promising undergraduate and graduate students planning to pursue careers in vertical flight, with three $ 1,000 scholarships awarded the first year. The second year, eight VFF scholarships were awarded, and several are now leaders in the technical community, including Ajay Sehgal (profiled last issue), Georgia Institute ofTechnology (now with Wyle Aerospace); Dale M. Pitt, Washington University (Boeing); and Robert M. McKillip, Jr., Princeton University (Continuum Dynamics, Inc.).
