A perfect storm of military cutbacks, slumping oil prices, and a struggling global economy has not robbed the rotorcraft industry of initiative or opportunity.The aircraft currently in or near flight testing cover a wide spread, ranging from the 2,250 lb (1 t) Enstrom TH180 trainer to the 88,000 lb (401) Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion Heavy Lift Replacement Helicopter. In mid-June, Airbus Helicopters began flight-testing what it considers the world's first all-composite commercial helicopter, the H160. On July 1, Bell Helicopter flew what it plans to be the world's first certificated fly-by-wire helicopter, the Model 525. AgustaWestland expects to fly a production-representative example of the world's first commercial tilt rotor, the AW609, next year. Meanwhile, two flying technology demonstrators - the eco-efficient Airbus Bluecopter and the fast, agile Sikorsky Raider - address the most prominent limitations of traditional helicopters.The coaxial compound Raider is the work of the Sikorsky Innovations rapid prototyping shop.
