China always thinks big. Like the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square - both massive in proportions - everything China plans and does these days is towards becoming the number one nation in the world in matters of statistics. Returning from Beijing after participating in the China Civil Helicopter Conference June 25-26 on behalf of the AHS International, my head was buzzing with numbers, trying to come to grips with the statistics the Chinese bureaucrats presented in their ambition to reach the top position in helicopter operations in the world. Their target country is the United States.They compared US numbers of helicopters and General Aviation (GA) operations and were unhappy at their own miserably lower numbers. They acknowledged their low level of technological development in this area compared to the developments in the West. But their ambition is to reach and then supersede these numbers. It is a classic case of top-down planning in defining what is best for the country.
