Of the four companies with Technology Investment Agreements (TIAs) for a Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstration (JMRTD),the US Army in August chose Sikorsky Aircraft and Bell Helicopter to build flying aircraft.The Sikorsky-Boeing SB>1 compound helicopter and Bell V-280 tiltrotor are expected to fly in 2017 and give the Army information to specify a medium-sized Future Vertical Lift (FVL) platform for production. Meanwhile, AVX Aircraft Company and Karem Aircraft Inc. remain in talks to define their roles under TIAs running through September, 2019. FVL Medium is expected to replace today's Black Hawk helicopter around 2034, and a mission system architecture demonstration separate from the air vehicle work will involve more cost-sharing agreements.What shape FVL ultimately takes depends on the JMR TD and other steps toward a Program of Record."lt's not one single decision," acknowledges JMR/FVL program director Dan Bailey. "Ultimately, we went through the process; we know what we want to do going forward, but making that occur is requiring some interconnectivity,if you will. So it's not as simple as just talking to any one party… It takes some iterations."
