Turbomeca initiated testing April 26 of theTECH800 demonstrator engine core, aimed at future helicopter turboshaft applications in the 1,100 shp (800 kW) power class.The demonstrator is being developed in cooperation with 34 partners from 10 European countries, including 18 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and 12 universities and research centers.The demonstrator is part of the seven year, 1.6 billion ($2.1 billion) Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative, with half contributed by the European Commission and half by industry and academia. Clean Sky is focused on dramatic reductions of CO_2, noise and NO_x emissions.The TECH800 is expected to demonstrate double-digit reductions in fuel consumption and CO_2 emissions (compared to the state of the art in 2000), as well as breakthroughs in noise, weight and control systems.TECH800 is one of six engine demonstrators under Clean Sky. In other news,Turbomeca bought out Rolls-Royce's 50% share in their joint venture to produce RTM 322s, the engines are used on AgustaWestland Apaches, AW101 sand NH90s.
