As part of NATO, the Spanish Army is being confronted with a new way of operating due to the changing role of defense forces since the fall of the Iron Curtain. Where the main role in the past was to defend the home countries, NATO is acting farther and farther from Europe in volatile areas of the world to help bring stability. This changing role also has an impact on Spanish army aviation - Fuerzas Aeromoviles del Ejercito de Tierra, or FAMET. As part of this special focus issue on Spain, we take a closer look to the present organization of FAMET and its plans for the future.
