Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT), wire and obstacle strikes, and brownout crashes continue to take a toll of rotorcraft and aircrews. The U.S.National Defense Center for Energy and the Environment reports CFIT in cruising flight alone destroyed nearly 150 US Army and Air Force helicopters and killed about 200 people over the last 20 years.The hazards are magnified by the fog, or blowing sand or snow of Degraded Visual Environments (DVE). Lockheed Martin Systems & Sensors (MS2) has demonstrated a Degraded Visual Environment Correlation Tracking & Obstacle Recognition system -DVECTOR - that integrates alternative sensors for different DVE threats on cockpit displays.
