About 800 Sikorsky employees have already been laid off over the past 18 months, while the remaining 575 Sikorsky workers are to be let go by the end of 2012 due to declining defense budgets and the continuing economic weakness. Meanwhile, Bell has indicated it may need to conduct layoffs or transfer employees from military to civil programs, such as its Model 525 "super medium"twin. Bell announced that it will need 100 new workers in Amarillo,Texas to build the 525, in addition to the more than 1,450 employees there working on the V-22, AH-Z,and UH-1Y.
