On September 12, EADS and BAE Systems announced plans to merge; on October 10, they announced they had ended talks after political and institutional stakeholders were unable to come to an agreement on terms
The UK,French and German governments had conflicting objectives and expectations after many weeks of conversation. The UK wished for limited interest by the governments of the merged companies, a deal that was met with major opposition from the German government. In addition, BAE has major businesses in the US, which would have been threatened by the merger. Stock prices for BAE began to fall after investors were unhappy with the details from talks of the deal, and fell further after news of the merger flop. If it had been successful, the merger would have created a defense giant comparable in size to Boeing.
